It is inevitable that at some point, either in the workplace or in your personal life, you will need to initiate or engage difficult conversations. Such conversations include providing critical feedback to a member of staff, apologising for one’s own behaviour, requesting a colleague or boss to examine and change their behaviour, dealing with tension within the team or with an individual. In fact, a difficult conversation is any conversation that you find difficult. During this session, participants will explore the dynamics involved in difficult conversations and develop their ability to initiate and manage these interchanges effectively.​

As leaders, we are constantly striving to maximise our own output and that of our team. We are all challenged by the need to juggle multiple tasks and responsibilities and to do more with less.  Staying focused on the bigger picture and knowing how to prioritise, enables us to get the best return on our effort and energy. During this session, participants will explore how to step back from the day to day, be mindful of the big picture and use this knowledge to prioritise their actions appropriately in order to enhance productivity and their own wellbeing.​

Mark Dobson  

Station Officer, Former Wellbeing Coordinator - Health and Safety, Fire and Rescue NSW 

Mark Dobson’s approach to his Wellbeing Coordinator role with Fire & Rescue NSW is innovative, proactive and recognised - in November 2015 he was honoured with a prestigious icare Treasury Managed Fund Award for Risk Leadership. Importantly Mark has created an evidence-based wellbeing model, founded on peer engagement and effective systems, which can be adapted to any public or private sector operation.  Mark has a natural empathy with people which has been honed during his various leadership roles with the Royal Australian Navy and in the fields of change management and television production. He is passionate about his current role and a compelling speaker.​

The ability to effectively manage and leverage relationships with people in more senior positions is a critical aspect of functioning effectively in any workplace environment, and is something that many young leaders find challenging. Failure to manage relationships with more senior colleagues effectively can lead to confusion, wasted time and effort and increased stress. But learning how to interact appropriately and build strong alliances with more senior staff can have major advantages in relation to future career advancement and job satisfaction. During this session participants will explore ways to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders and how to handle more challenging or delicate situations.​

As well as being part of who you are and how you want to be known, your reputation reflects your ambitions and how you go about achieving them. This session focusses on creating a pragmatic and purposeful plan for on-going professional and personal achievement and developing an awareness of what influences others’ perception and experience of us. Participants explore elements such as establishing a personal vision, prioritizing investment in professional development and identifying and achieving key career goals.​

Monica Barone

Chief Executive Officer of the City of Sydney 

Monica has overseen the development and implementation of the City’s long term vision for Central Sydney - Sustainable Sydney 2030. 

She manages approximately 2000 staff and contractors, an annual Capital expenditure and Operational expenditure budget of approximately $880 million and $11.6 billion dollars of net assets including the Council’s commercial property portfolio. The City will be providing for a capital works program of $1.8 Billion over the next 10 years.

In 2015 the City of Sydney processed over five billion dollars of new development. The City’s major projects are the CBD Light Rail (initiated and partially funded by City of Sydney but now managed by Transport for NSW) and the $13 billion Green Square Urban Renewal site. 

Since her appointment the City has completed hundreds of infrastructure projects including active transport, community facilities and parks - winning over 90 national and international awards. 

Monica is on the Designing Western Sydney – 200,000 jobs Steering Committee and the Springboard Advisory panel. She is a member of Australian Institute of Company Directors. She was on the board of Sydney Festival for 10 years until mid-2015.

Monica holds a Masters in Creative Arts, was a 2014 ‘100 Women of Influence’ finalist and is a member of Chief Executive Women​

Session 2: Taking charge of your career and your professional reputation

The Hon Victor Dominello MP (Speaking on behalf of Premier Gladys Berejiklian)

NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property

Victor was born and raised in the Ryde area. He went to school at Marist Brothers Eastwood before studying law. He was a partner in a commercial law firm, where he represented clients in a number of landmark cases.

Victor was elected as Member for Ryde at a by-election in October 2008. He was re-elected at the 2011 state election. 

In April 2011 he was sworn in as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Minister for Citizenship and Communities. His portfolio responsibilities included multicultural affairs, veterans’ affairs, volunteering and youth.

Following the Liberals & Nationals Government’s re-election in March 2015, Victor was sworn in as the state’s first Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation.

His portfolio responsibilities included Fair Trading, where he led a range of consumer affairs matters including strata title, home building compensation, real estate industry reform, free-range egg labelling, brothel regulation, biofuels, residential overcrowding and the establishment of a consumer complaints register. 

Victor was also responsible for implementing the NSW Government’s ICT Strategy and innovation agenda which included the establishment of a whole-of-government Data Analytics Centre and response to the collaborative economy.

In January 2017, Victor was appointed Minister for Finance, Services and Property. His portfolio responsibilities include Property NSW, Office of State Revenue and Service NSW. He has also retained responsibility for the whole-of-government Data Analytics Centre.

Prior to his parliamentary career, Victor cherished the opportunity to travel to many places around the world and looks back fondly on his experiences in India, Central and South America, Europe, the US and Asia.  He is also a passionate supporter of West Tigers rugby league team.

Tracy Webber  

Organisational Change Manager, Transport NSW  

Tracy Webber is a passionate and professional, organisational change manager. After completing a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) at University of New South Wales Tracy’s career commenced at Westpac. For the past twenty years Tracy has worked in both the Public and Private sectors in both Australia and the UK, with the past ten years focussed on delivering complex change programs. Before leaving the UK in 2009 Tracy delivered the first ever National Leadership Framework for the UK Department of Health, resulting in a systematic approach to developing clinical and non-clinical leadership. After arriving back in Australia in 2010, Tracy completed a Masters in Applied Science, Psychology of Coaching at the University of Sydney. This has equipped and challenged Tracy to use key principles from positive psychology and coaching to provide organisation change services.   Tracy works with executives and teams through change and challenges with the fundamental belief that there is always opportunity for positivity in the workplace (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/room-positivity-your-workplace-tracy-webber?trk=prof-post) Tracy is also involved in providing pro-bono coaching services for a young leader’s development program based in Sydney, and mental toughness coaching for triathletes.
